Walk-Behind Power Trowels
A walk-behind power trowel — a power float, in UK usage — runs one rotor with four blades and a handle the operator walks behind. You steer it with weight, not force: lifting the handle moves the machine one way, lowering it moves it the other, and blade pitch is set with a dial while the machine is running. Its job is different from a ride-on: it reaches where a large machine cannot manoeuvre, and it suits slabs that do not justify putting 350 kg of machine on site.

Two sizes are offered. The TPT-600 is an edging trowel with a 600 mm rotor at 53 kg, with a rotating guard ring and a rubber bumper that lets it work hard against the wall. The TPT-900 and TPT-900R10 run a 940 mm rotor at 76–87 kg, with 5.5 to 10 hp on offer.
All three have variable speed across 70–140 rpm, a centrifugal safety cut-out instead of a dead man's handle, and a float pan supplied as standard — nothing extra is needed for the first pass.

Why a walk-behind pulls to one side
The rotor turns one way, so by action and reaction the whole machine is pushed the other. On a ride-on this disappears, because two rotors turn against each other and cancel out. With a single rotor there is nothing to cancel — the push arrives at the handle and the operator balances it.
The design turns that drawback into the steering system. The handle is not there to shove the machine; it is there to shift where the load sits. Raising it loads the trailing edge of the rotor and the machine tracks one way, lowering it sends the machine the other, and holding it level keeps the machine still. Steering is therefore a matter of small vertical movements, not effort. An operator who tries to force the machine across the slab is worn out by mid-shift and leaves an uneven finish.
This is also where the size limit of the class comes from. At 940 mm and 76–87 kg the sideways push is still manageable by hand; a bigger rotor would demand effort nobody sustains for several hours. Past that point you are into ride-on machines.

The TPT-900 comes with a choice of engine — a Loncin G200 of 196 cc rated 5.5 hp, or a Rato R210 rated 7 hp — which is where the 76–83 kg weight spread comes from. The R10 is the same machine with a 10 hp unit, a larger tank and a larger sump.
An edging trowel is a different tool, not a smaller one
Every round machine leaves a strip along the wall as wide as the rotor radius plus its guard. On a 940 mm machine that strip is tens of centimetres, and in a shed with a row of columns it adds up to hundreds of square metres that have to be finished by something else.
The TPT-600 solves this with its guard, not with its diameter. The ring is rotating and carries a rubber bumper, so it can rest against the wall while the machine works: the bumper rolls along the surface and the blades reach right into the junction. Without that, a small diameter alone would just be a smaller machine still leaving an unfinished strip.
Everything else about the build serves access. The 750 × 1490 × 910 mm footprint is narrow and long so it fits between obstacles, 53 kg means two people can carry it over a threshold or up stairs, and the folding handle shortens it enough to travel in an estate car. This is a tool for edges, corners, column surrounds and drain gullies — which is also where concrete sets first, so those areas get finished before the middle of the bay.
Two details that only show up in use
Blade pitch on a dial. Pitch changes as finishing progresses: early passes run with the blades almost flat, later ones with the pitch raised, because a steeper angle raises contact pressure and closes the surface. On the TPT-900 the dial sits on the handle, on the TPT-600 at the rear of the machine, so the adjustment is made without stepping off the slab or breaking the pass.
Centrifugal safety cut-out. The conventional arrangement is a dead man's handle that kills the engine when released — except that operators habitually strap it down, because holding it for hours tires the hand, and a strapped handle protects nobody. A centrifugal cut-out works differently: it reacts to the machine breaking free and spinning about its own axis, and cuts the ignition then. There is nothing to strap down, because there is nothing to hold.
Drive on the TPT-900 runs through a V-belt to a large gearbox. The belt is the deliberately weakest link: if the rotor jams, it slips instead of passing the shock into the gearbox and crankshaft. A belt is cheap and quick to change; a gearbox is neither.
How to choose a walk-behind power trowel
Count edges, not just area
On a rectangular slab with no obstructions, one 940 mm machine is enough. In a shed with columns, ducts and machine bases, linear metres of edge grow faster than area, and every metre of edge has to be finished separately and earlier than the middle. At that point the TPT-600 is not a spare machine, it is a second full-time job on site.
Match power to method, not to floor area
On plain concrete the difference between 5.5 and 10 hp is invisible. It shows up in two situations: working a dry-shake hardener in, when blade resistance jumps, and on the last passes at a steep pitch, where a weaker engine loses revs and the finish comes out uneven. If you lay industrial floors with a hardener, the TPT-900R10 is a technical choice rather than a luxury.
Check the tank against the finishing window
The tank holds 3.6 l on the TPT-600 and TPT-900 and 5.4 l on the TPT-900R10. In finishing this is not about range but about interruptions: refuelling mid-pass kills the rhythm and risks the surface drying back where the machine stood. The larger tank buys one fewer stop inside the window, not a longer working day.
Plan how the machine reaches the slab
At 53 kg the TPT-600 is a two-person carry, and with the handle folded it travels in an ordinary car. The 940 mm machines weigh 76–87 kg and measure 1820 × 945 × 980 mm, so they realistically need a trailer or a van. For upper floors, plan a hoist or a ramp — carrying a machine of that weight up stairs is not a plan, it is an accident.

What does the blade pitch dial do?
The dial changes the angle of attack of the blades while the machine is running, without stopping it. Early passes are made with the blades almost flat so they do not score the green surface; on later passes the pitch is raised, contact pressure climbs and the surface closes progressively. The dial sits on the handle on the TPT-900 and at the rear of the machine on the TPT-600. Without that adjustment, one machine would only cover one stage of finishing.
What happens if the operator lets go?
The machine has a centrifugal safety cut-out that kills the engine the moment the trowel breaks free and starts spinning about its own axis.
