A core drill stand is not a bracket for the motor. It is what sets three things the machine alone does not: the largest diameter you can drill, the depth reachable from one setup, and whether the hole comes out square.

Column and travel — two figures that set the working range
Travel is the distance the motor carriage can descend, which means the depth of hole reachable from one setup. On the DS 250 that is 600 mm; on the DS 400, 1650 mm. Through a 400 mm wall either will do; through a layered slab or a foundation wall, the difference decides whether the job can be done without repositioning the stand.
Column section — 55 × 60 mm against 70 × 70 mm — is about stiffness. A large-diameter bit applies a moment that tries to bend the column; the more it deflects, the further the hole drifts off square, and the bit starts cutting on one side and wearing unevenly. That is why a 402 mm range needs a heavier column, not just a stronger motor.
The third figure is the base: 400 × 230 mm on the DS 250 and 410 × 330 mm on the DS 400. A larger area spreads the fixing load over more of the slab — which matters wherever the substrate is not solid concrete.

Note the relationship between the stand's maximum diameter and the motor's range. The DS 250 is rated at 252 mm, while the largest motor assigned to it — the DD 22 — drills to 220 mm. The stand therefore has margin, and that is how it should be: the structure carries more than what works on it, never the other way round.
Why squareness depends on the stand, not the operator
Drilling by hand, direction is held by a person, and after a few tens of centimetres the hole starts to drift. On a stand, direction is fixed once, when the base is secured, and the carriage can only move along the column. The operator meters the feed on a handwheel — they do not steer the machine.
Three practical results follow. The hole is square along its whole length, so a pipe or cable goes in without forcing. The bit cuts on its full circumference rather than one side, so segments wear evenly and the bit lasts longer. And the core comes out in one piece, which through thick walls saves time clearing the hole.

How to choose a stand
Start from the motor you have
Matching is stated outright and leaves no room for approximation: the DS 250 takes the DD 18, DD 22 and DDB 26, while the DS 400 is built for the DD 33. If you are buying both together, a complete rig from complete core drills is simpler.
Work out depth, not just diameter
600 mm of travel covers walls and slabs of ordinary thickness. The 1650 mm on the DS 400 is a different class of work: penetrations through foundation walls, layered constructions and any situation where repositioning the stand halfway would cost you the axis.
Check what the base will fix to
A base of 400 × 230 or 410 × 330 mm needs something to bear against. In solid concrete that is no issue; in a thin screed, over tiles, or working on a wall, the fixing method has to be settled before leaving for site, because it decides whether the stand will stand at all.
Weigh the whole load
16.5 and 27.8 kg are the stands alone; add the motor (8–15.3 kg), bits, fixings and water. The DS 400 is also 2 m long, so not every vehicle takes it — which is often more of an issue than the weight.

Not every van takes that without folding seats. To the stand weight you still have to add the motor, bits, fixings and water.
Why is the stand rated above the motor?
Because it should be. The DS 250 is rated at 252 mm while the largest motor assigned to it, the DD 22, drills to 220 mm. The supporting structure carries more than what works on it, so that at maximum diameter there is still stiffness in reserve. The reverse — a motor whose range exceeds the stand's — means working at the limit of the column and holes that drift off plumb.
What else is needed besides the stand and motor?
A bit matched to the material and diameter, a means of fixing the base to the substrate, and a way of supplying and collecting water if drilling wet. Working above an occupied room adds sealing the opening so water does not run down through it. Bits are in diamond core drill bits, and slurry is collected by wet and slurry vacuums.
